    Abstract
    Benzene (benzol) is produced from coal and is used in the manufacture of medicinal chemicals, dyes and many other organic compounds. It is also used to produce artificial leather, linoleum, oil cloth, varnishes and lacquers. It is moderately soluble in water, and enters the aquatic environment mainly via discharges from industrial processes.
