    Abstract
Benzoyl peroxide (dibenzoyl peroxide) is a crystalline solid produced in large volume. It serves the chemical industry in the initiation of free-radical reactions in the formation of plastic and resin poly mers. It is also used to bleach flour and oils. Benzoyl peroxide is moderately soluble in water, and may enter the aquatic environment via discharges from chemical plants where it is manufactured or used, and spills.
