    Abstract
Chloroform is a clear, colorless, nonflammable liquid which is heavier than water. It is used as a solvent, a cleansing agent, and in fire extinguishers to lower the freezing point of carbon tetrachloride. It has also been used as an anesthetic. Chloroform may enter the aquatic environment via industrial effluents, municipal treatment plant discharges, or spills. It is highly soluble in water.
