    Abstract
    Propylene oxide (methyloxirane) is a colorless, flammable liquid used in the manufacture of polyurethanes, propylene and dipropylene glycols, lubricants, surfactants and oil demulsifiers. It is also used as a solvent, fumigant and soil sterilant. Propylene oxide -is highly soluble in water, and may enter the aquatic environment via effluents from chemical plants where it is manufactured or used, as a leachate from the soil, or spills.
