This literature review examines the treatments for major depression in children and adolescents.
Prescription drugs, counseling options, and lifestyle changes are reviewed and evaluated for the
effectiveness in the treatment of major depression. The only classification of prescription drugs
that are reviewed in this literature review are SSRIs, such as fluoxetine, due to its effectiveness
and safety for the use in this population. The counseling technique that is reviewed for the
treatment of major depression in this population is Cognitive Behavioral therapy, which has been
shown to be the most effective treatment for major depression in general, including children and
adolescents. The lifestyle changes that are reviewed include exercise, limiting caffeine, and
reviewing medications that the children or adolescents may be taking. In addition, the
implications for school psychologists in the treatment of major depression in children and
adolescents are reviewed and summarized, which include screening the student population for
major depression and implementing interventions if necessary for the students who demonstrate
the need for additional services.
