Adolescent suicide is a very serious topic that should be discussed in many different professional
settings. Whether one is a private counselor working with youth clients or one is a staff member
in a school, individuals should be aware of suicide risk factors and indicators of children and
adolescents. The following pages examine the theory base of suicide, as well as common risk
factors and protective factors. The study is concluded with an examination of suicide awareness
programming in schools and recommendations for more training within the school system.
Further research could focus on specific school staff’s awareness of suicide risk factors and
indicators, as well as in-depth analysis of various school-based suicide awareness training and
protocols when dealing with a possible suicidal individual.
