This study investigates the complex factors that contribute to police officer retention, focusing on the challenges law enforcement agencies are facing in retaining law enforcement officers. This study further investigates why law enforcement officers choose to either leave the criminal justice field or to transfer to another agency.
This study analyzes what four current law enforcement agencies are doing that is effective for their agency in retaining their police officers. Through an in-depth analysis of the Madison Police Department, Las Angeles Police Department, Chicago Police Department, and Detroit Police Department, we can better understand the practices these agencies have incorporated to fulfill their mission to their communities by retaining their experienced police officers.
By developing an understanding of why officers resign from their agencies and how different agencies within the United States are effectively using compensation packages, salary adjustments, officer career development, internal advancement opportunities, training opportunities, promotions, sought-after positions, employee community engagement, sympathetic and empathetic leadership, and mental health/wellness programs, this study aims to offer practical methods for police officer retention.
