WISCONSIN'S LAKE SUPERIOR BASIN WATER QUALITY STUDY
Abstract
During the period extending from May 1972 through April 1973 a joint investigation of the overall
water quality conditions of streams flowing into Lake Superior from the entire State of Wisconsin
was conducted by the Center for Lake Superior Environmental Studies (CLSES) of the University of
Wisconsin at Superior and the Sigurd Olson Institute of Environmental Studies (SOIES) at
Northland College, Ashland, Wisconsin. This project, funded through the Title I Higher Education
Act of 1965, resulted in a comprehensive 1973 publication entitled "Wisconsin's Lake Superior Basin
Water Quality Study." The goal of this publication was to provide much needed regional information
on water quality, drainage basins, pollution sources and loads, and population distribution for
use in regional planning and problem solving efforts.
