Designing a professional English for rail transit course for vocational college students in China
Abstract
Current English courses at vocational colleges in China often emphasize general language skills over specialized communication needs. With the rapid expansion of the rail transit industry and the ongoing reforms in vocational education in China, there is a pressing need to integrate industry-specific English into the curriculum for vocational college students. This paper proposes an English for Specific Purposes course tailored for vocational colleges in China, with a particular focus on Professional English for Rail Transit (PERT). Through a detailed literature review, this study identifies five key principles for successful ESP course design. The proposed PERT course aims to equip students with the necessary language skills required for careers in the rail transit sector, enhancing their employability and professional competencies. Practical recommendations are provided to facilitate the implementation of the PERT course, ultimately contributing to the advancement of vocational English education in China.
