Company XYZ is well-known for a specialized type of construction, and they are struggling to train their new hires. Due to the departure of several longtime construction employees from retirement and loss to competitors, Company XYZ had to fill the positions with newer, less experienced hires. Previously, there was no formal training program for new hires, since the bulk of the construction crew were long-time, experienced workers, and there was not that much of a need. Company XYZ’s construction work is highly specialized in nature, and currently both new and existing employees only learn through on-the-job training. This method of training is threatening to slow down the construction work, affect deadlines and accuracy, and is inefficient. Now, with so many inexperienced employees performing Company XYZ’s specialized construction work, there is a need for a formal training program. There needed to be a study to determine what is the best starting point in developing a training program to teach this specialized work. This study used a survey presented to the current construction crew, to determine their learning preferences, learning styles, and areas of need for task training. Findings included a need for additional welding training and more time spent in Company XYZ’s manufacturing shop, prior to working in the field. Using this data will enable Company XYZ to start the development of a learning program, and as a result, improve job performance, job satisfaction, work accuracy, and improve construction deadlines.
