Small businesses may have an increased potential for loss due to being inexperienced in the area
of emergency response and preparedness. The goals of the study were to assess Company
XYZ’s emergency response and preparedness as well as equipment inspection plans. Public city
and county emergency response records for a twelve-block radius of the business indicated that
multiple businesses incurred unauthorized entries on different occasions during and after
business hours and thus Company XYZ’s location did experience increases in police presence.
The organization’s procedures were collected and evaluated to assess the level of potential sitebased
hazards and the likelihood of adverse occurrences. An analysis of internal risk-reduction
practices indicated that Company XYZ was not documenting dance equipment or device
inspections. The business did not document facility perimeter inspections to ensure sound
defensible spaces or emergency egress practices. In addition to not maintaining a personnel
injury log, Company XYZ lacked portable fire extinguisher and other related prevention and
control-based inspection measures. The organization had failed to develop a comprehensive
emergency response system which addresses severe weather, wildfires, earthquakes and
unauthorized personnel entry threats. It should be noted the organization increased the number of
surveillance cameras inside and outside of the business. Company XYZ should develop
procedural checklists to assist with equipment inspections and also consult with federal, state,
and local emergency response agencies to assist with the development of emergency
preparedness and response plans. Company XYZ should also research and develop postemergency
measures which will expedite the restoration of the business.
