Retention and recruitment have been a challenge for women in the construction industry,
particularly women of color. Women must prove the lengths they have gone to while entering a
male-dominated field. It can be challenging for women to demonstrate that they can perform at
the same level as men to close the skills gap. This research seeks consistency in locating methods
for resolving this issue, as well as mentorships and guidance to aid in overcoming this obstacle.
A content analysis examined women of color in construction and their retention and challenges. Researchers have not been able to solve the reasons for the lack of recruitment for women of color, even though the talent is there. It was difficult to show if others have seen this as an issue. A survey was conducted to resolve unresolved questions regarding the dearth of women in the industry. Women who were members of a women's construction organization, participants in the local building trades, employees of general construction contractors, or ambassadors for apprenticeship recruitment were surveyed. In this research, an online survey of 53 participants were conducted. The survey was distributed to participants in the Carpentry Training Institute and women that hold different positions in the construction industry with general contractors. The research revealed there needs to be more involvement and awareness of programs across the United States, allowing women to network with other women who can associate with the same scenarios and situations in the construction industry.
