Harold Halfin came to the Stout Institute as a graduate student in 1953. He taught five machine shop classes as graduate student for H.C. Milnes, who taught shop, pattern making and in the foundry. After graduating in 1951, Halfin taught industrial arts at a high school in Ohio and in 1955-1956 taught metals at Fairmont State College, West Virginia where he had earlier completed his undergraduate degree. In January of 1956, Halfin returned to Stout State College as an instructor in the metals department and again taught machine shop. He taught general metals and welding until he was appointed the first program director of the graduate program in vocational education, now known as career and technical education. Halfin served as co-director, with Orville Nelson, of the Center for Vocational, Technical and Adult Education from 1968-1986. He retired in 1986.
