The purpose of this study was to answer the question: Do activities stimulating more than one
sensory system at a time increase attention and longevity of participation in play at home for
young children with special needs? Children ages 3-6 and their parents were invited to join the
study beginning with a parent workshop to discuss the procedure and learn more about
sensory development. Parents completed a pre-intervention survey to collect baseline
qualitative data on their children's engagement during routine play activities at home as well as
quantitative data on what activities their children gravitate towards. During the
implementation phase, parents utilized multi-sensory activities provided by the researcher at
home with their children. Specifics on how to use the materials as well as requested guidelines
on time were shared including availability and direct parent involvement. After four weeks of
implementation in the home, parents were asked to complete a post-intervention survey. This
survey collected qualitative data regarding child engagement as well as quantitative data on
parental interest in continuing to offer similar opportunities at home in the future. Pre- and
post-intervention data was analyzed for support of an increase in child's engagement with
multi-sensory activities in play at home.
