This field report sought to gain a better understanding of the importance of physical activity
among middle school students with intellectual disabilities (ID). Using a case study research
design, the author interviewed parents of students with ID, students with ID, and teachers who
either have children of their own with ID or teach students with ID. The research questions
were: (1) What are the barriers and challenges that exist which limit the successful
implementation of regular physical activity with middle school students with intellectual
disabilities and why is this important for this population? (2) In what ways can families, schools,
and community members prepare middle school students with intellectual disabilities to form a
fulfilled adult life through the promotion of physical activity? Results indicate that the majority
of community members interviewed feel that physical activity is important in the lives of middle
school students with ID. Discussion of the research findings is included.
