    Abstract
In their interview with Dave Egan on November 15, 2022, naturalists John Rieger, John Stanley, and Bill Jordan detail how they wound up working together at the Society for Restoration Ecology (SER) and how the concept of ecological restoration has evolved since the start of their careers. They described the field of restoration ecology prior to the formation of SER in 1987 and how they went about organizing the first SER conference/symposium in 1989. They then went on to discuss several key conferences and committees that occurred following the success of SER’s launch, as well as the myriad of individuals that were fundamental to making these events a success. This interview was conducted for the Ecological Restoration Project and will be housed in the Oral History Collection at the UW-Madison Archives.
