In Abyss, a 3D digital game, the gameplay aims to invoke cooperation among the players to help them experience the emotional ties formed by overcoming challenges. These challenges are the basis of how humans can have positive interactions digitally. This paper defines the mechanics and methods used to build positive emotional connections, social interactions and how these systems are used in modern game design. The goal of this project was to help understand what forges meaningful bonds with fellow players through the joy of gaming by introducing cooperative challenges which encourages and tests the players' communication, trust, and skill. The related thesis project focuses on implementing and assisting cooperative game mechanics and immersive, exploratory world-building. This experience draws on previous historical/landmark studies and games that have explored similar ideas. This project proposes a way to design games to maximize positive social impact within the scope of their role as entertainment media.en_US
