This document describes the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s College Year in India Program. It was written in a prose format by Professor Emeritus Joseph W. Elder and Associate Dean Emerita Joan A. Raducha, PhD. The collation, final editing and links were done by South Asian Librarian, Todd Michelson-Ambelang, PhD. The document describes three aspects of the creation, changes, and thriving of the study abroad program in its more than 50 years of existence. The first section of the document is a history of the early years of the University of Wisconsin-Madison's intellectual focus on India after World War II. The second section is how the study abroad program was run, including the setting up of the program and stories of changes in culture and education. The final section is a qualitative account of participants' answers to questions asked in a survey. Together the three sections provide an understanding of the study abroad program, in addition to the history of South Asian Studies at UW-Madison and the Center for South Asia on UW-Madison’s campus.
