Project AWARE began at a lake Superior Water Consortium meeting held 17 January 1974. Schools

A proposal titled "Effective Regional Use of the Water Resources in the Lake Superior Basin
Through Continuing Community Education" was funded 1 July 1974. The objectives of the proposal were: Data collection and translation; information collection, storage and retrieval; attitude analysis and information delivery. Ongoing
evaluation was considered an integral part of the project, and was conducted independently by a
Community Development Specialist from University of Wisconsin Extension.
