The Lake Superior Research Institute (LSRI) of the University of Wisconsin-Superior contracted with
the Chicago District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to perform a study of the bioaccumulation
of PCBs from Waukegan Harbor sediment by the oligochaete, Lumbriculus variegatus. In addition to
determining PCB concentrations on a congener-specific basis in the sediment and exposed organisms,
measures of total organic carbon (TDC) in the sediment and percent total lipids in the organisms
were obtained.
