In 1923, UW-Stout President Burton E. Nelson saw a need for organization among the student body. This led to creation of two separate student organizations: Stout Student Association (SSA) and Stout Student Council. The Stout Student Association, established in 1923, worked in conjunction with other student organizations. The SSA was involved with student programing, event organization, money distribution to other student organizations, and homecoming planning. The Stout Student Council was established as the student governance body. The Stout Student Council originally formed in 1914, but it only lasted for about two years. It was reestablished in 1926, but again, it only lasted for about a year. In the fall of 1927, the Stout Student Council became the Stout Student Advisory Board. The Stout Student Advisory Board, later referred to as Student Advisory Council, represented the students through their class organizations, and it was loosely tied to SSA. During 1930-1931, SSA formed a student governance committee known as the Joint Committee on Student Affairs. The Student Advisory Board reported to this committee for a few years, but by 1939, they ceased to exist. The Joint Committee on Student Affairs remained part of SSA, but its name changed to the Joint Committee on Student Relations in 1939. By 1948, it had changed again to the Student Governing Board prior to 1948, and by 1959, it was known as the Student Senate. The Student Senate remains its title, and it still is a section of SSA. SSA continues to work with student organizations and student programing. SSA is granted authority under the Wisconsin State Statute 36.09(5). It represents the student body in campus decisions, and it helps to connect the students with the administration.en_US
