Description
The Office of Academic Affairs had its formal beginnings in 1964 when Dr. John A. Jarvis was named Dean of Instruction. Jarvis first came to Stout in 1946. Prior to his new appointment, Jarvis had served as Dean of the Division of Industrial Education and the Director of Summer Session. As the new Dean, Jarvis became responsible for the supervision of the college's entire instructional program. Two years later, following a reorganization of the University's administrative structure, Jarvis became the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
After stepping down in 1971, Jarvis was replaced by Dr. Wesley L. Face. Face, a long-time faculty member at Stout, had been the University Curriculum Coordinator and Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs. He had also served as acting Vice President of Academic Affairs when Jarvis was interim President of Stout. In 1973, Face was named as Vice Chancellor, the number two administrative position at the university. In this position, Face assumed increased operational responsibilities that cut across division lines, while remaining as head of the university's academic affairs. Offices reporting to the Vice Chancellor were: Learning Resources, Continuing Education and Summer Session, Graduate College and Research, and the Schools of Education, Liberal Studies, Home Economics, and Industry and Technology. Face remained as the Vice Chancellor of Stout until 1990 when he assumed the James Huff Stout professorship.
