Medical assault: Two nineteenth century cases
Abstract
This article discusses two nineteenth century cases in which surgery was performed over the objections of a competent adult patient and was followed by governmental investigation and action. The two cases are Jonathon Monckton’s operation on James Roberts in England in 1835 and John Dawson’s operation on James Shannon in Ohio in 1857.
