    Abstract
The purpose of this research was twofold: Firstly, to establish a rationale for the development of a supplement of environmental education activities for the Holt, Rinehart and Winston 1981 Modern Biology textbook by by Otto, Towle and Bradley. This rationale was based on the location of and the means by which environmental education is commonly treated within the formal school system. The second purpose was to offer suggestions, recommendations, and examples of the elements which the proposed supplement should contain. This included sample activities and sample reference materials designed for a specific unit in the Modern Biology text. It is the author’s intention that this paper serve as the first step in the actual development of such a supplement and that hopefully, further research will be conducted to insure its completion.
