The purpose of this study was to determine if wearing the Energy Necklace can affect steady-state exercise responses, competitive exercise performance, or enhance recovery from exercise in competitive cyclists. Sixteen subjects (13 male, 3 female) performed a VO2max test and two habituation sessions. Subjects then completed two randomized, double-blinded 10 km time trials on a cycle ergometer, one with the Energy Necklace, and one with the placebo necklace. Heart Rate (HR), Rating of Perceived Exertion (RPE), and lactate ([HLa]) responses were measured during warm-up, time trials, and cooldown. Time to complete each time trial was recorded. There were no statistically significant differences in HR, RPE, [HLa], or time to completion between the Energy Necklace and the placebo during warm-up, time trials, or cool-down. The result of this study demonstrates that the Energy Necklace does not enhance athletic performance as claimed by the manufacturer.
