Oral History Interview: Jay Hatheway (1292)
Abstract
In his September 14, 2012, interview with Troy Reeves, Jay Hatheway discusses his academic journey to UW-Madison, detailing his research about Nazis in Germany. He touches on his initial contact with George Mosse and his experience with the court. He also details issues pertaining to queerness in the military, his experience in graduate school, his experience with former members of the SS, and his mother’s journey with lung cancer. In his October 5, 2012, interview with Troy Reeves, Hatheway discusses gay culture in Madison. He detail gay bars, such as The Cardinal and Rodney’s. He also discusses the protest against ROTC led by gays and lesbians on the UW-Madison campus. Besides that, he details his PhD journey at Madison College, the governor’s HIV task force, and his experience with the rural LGBTQ+ community. In his October 26, 2012, interview with Troy Reeves, Hatheway discusses his activism against LGBTQ+ discrimination in Madison. He touches on working with the rural LGBTQ+ community to spread HIV awareness. He also details his interactions with Tammy Baldwin, the SS ideology, American Military policy, and his friend David. This interview series was conducted for inclusion into the LGBTQ+ oral history project in the UW-Madison Archives & Records Management oral history collection.
