    Abstract
The Roscoe project at the University of Wisconsin is an experimental network of microcomputers running a common operating system. The purpose of the project is to develop techniques and software needed to create a distributed system that can run on loosely coupled identical processors without shared memory. This paper gives an overview of Roscoe, introducing some of the concepts of which it is based, and discussing some problems currently under investigation.
