The purpose of this study was to do a comprehensive review of the literature exploring the relationship between students with ADD/ADHD and low self-esteem. This comprehensive literature review describes how students with ADD/ADHD can learn to cope with their deficits, identify potential strengths and unique personality characteristics within them, and finally how to help these individuals improve their self-esteem. Sufficient literature was found in support of a relationship between children with ADHD and low self-esteem. The literature reveals that children with ADHD and low self-esteem are at risk for having poor academic performance, unsuccessful peer relationships, a low self-concept, and lack of self-confidence. The literature revealed that these children need accommodations, support and patience from their parents, educators and caretakers in order to prepare children for lifelong learning, successful social-peer interaction and high self-esteem. Individuals in a position to make positive strides in these children’s lives must make every effort to encourage these children to be proud of and use to their advantage their unique and special personality characteristics that only they possess.
